Glossary

Every term, plain English

No prior data background assumed: every word and metric in FN Analytica, decoded.

Platform basics

Island

Epic's term for a single published Fortnite experience: what players find and play through Discover. We say "island," never "map."

Island code

The short code (like 1234-5678-9012) players type into Fortnite to launch a specific island directly, bypassing Discover.

Creator

A person or studio account that publishes islands. One creator can own many islands (see "Avg Islands / Creator" on the Ecosystem tab).

UEFN

Unreal Editor for Fortnite: Epic's full development toolset for building islands with custom code (Verse) and imported assets, distinct from the simpler in-game Creative editor.

Fortnite Creative

Epic's in-game island editor: quicker and more limited than UEFN, no custom code. Many islands are built with a mix of both tools.

UGC

User-Generated Content: islands built by creators (the entire dataset this app tracks), as opposed to Epic's own first-party experiences (Battle Royale, etc.), which aren't part of the Discover creator ecosystem this app covers.

Discover

The in-game tab where players find islands to play: Fortnite's equivalent of an app store front page. Placement here is the main driver of an island's traffic.

Discover row

One horizontal shelf of islands within Discover (e.g. a genre row, a "Trending" row). Getting an island onto a row, and where it sits within that row, is what drives visibility. That position rotates day to day and isn't a competitive rank; see Genre Rank for the honest one.

Verified island

An island whose creator has uploaded their own Epic Creator Portal export to FN Analytica, unlocking private analytics (real payout-adjacent numbers, benchmarks, Health Score) that public tracking alone can't see.

Creator Portal

Epic's own dashboard where creators see their islands' official stats and payout-related figures. FN Analytica reads an export from it to power Verified-tier analytics. We don't have API access to Epic's live data.

Engagement payout

The money Epic pays creators, calculated from an internal formula based on player engagement (not publicly documented in full). PSVS is one known component of it.

Our classification

Genre

The gameplay type an island is: tycoon, shooter, box fight, horror, parkour, and so on. This is how we group islands by what you actually do in them.

See alsoCategory

Category

The IP or franchise label an island is built around: Star Wars, TMNT, KPop Demon Hunters, and so on. Genre is about gameplay; category is about branding. An island can be both a genre (tycoon) and a category (Star Wars) at once.

Core counts

Play

One session of a player launching an island. A single player can rack up many plays of the same island over time: plays counts visits, not people.

Unique player(Uniques)

A distinct player, counted once regardless of how many times they played within the window: the "how many people" number, as opposed to plays' "how many visits" number.

Daily Island Players (per-island sum)

The average number of players active per day, summed across every island: a player active on 3 islands in one day counts 3 times. This is bigger than true platform headcount because of that double-counting; a genuinely deduplicated platform-wide daily-player figure isn't currently computable from our data sources.

AVG over the week of SUM(uniquePlayers) across all islands, per day

Active island

An island with more than 5 plays in the past week. Below that, we treat it as effectively dormant even if it's still technically published.

CCU

Concurrent players: how many people are playing an island at the exact same moment. This is a snapshot number, not a total over time.

Peak CCU

The single highest concurrent-player count an island (or the whole platform) hit during the selected time window: a maximum, not a typical or average value.

See alsoCCU

Average CCU

The typical concurrent-player count over the selected window, as opposed to Peak CCU's one-time high. Better for gauging sustained population than a single spike.

Time & depth

Session

One continuous stretch of a player being in an island before they leave, roughly equivalent to a "play."

Average session length

How many minutes a typical player spends in an island per visit: a core signal of whether the experience holds attention.

Minutes per player

Total minutes played divided by unique players: how much time the average distinct player put in overall, across however many sessions they had (not the same as a single session's length).

Total minutes

The full sum of minutes played across every session in the selected window: the rawest measure of how much time an island is soaking up platform-wide.

Sticky Minutes

Playtime weighted by D7 retention: a way of measuring minutes that actually come from players who stuck around, rather than minutes from a one-time visit. Used as the public-data proxy for payout-relevant engagement, since raw payout numbers only exist for Verified islands.

SUM(minutesPlayed × d7Retention), trailing 28 days

Retention

D1 retention(D1)

The share of a day's players who come back and play again the very next day. A high D1 means the island's first impression is strong enough to bring people back immediately.

D7 retention(D7)

The share of a day's players who are still coming back a full week later. A high D7 signals a genuinely sticky, long-term experience rather than a one-week novelty.

Retention distribution

How islands spread across D1/D7 retention bands (e.g. 0-5%, 90-100%) rather than just one platform average: shows whether most islands cluster low, or whether there's a healthy tail of genuinely sticky ones.

Stickiness

Plain-English shorthand for how well an island retains players over time: usually meaning strong D1/D7 retention and healthy replay rate together, not one specific number.

Churn

The flip side of retention: players who leave and don't come back. An island with low D1/D7 retention has high churn.

Social & conversion

Favorite

A player bookmarking an island in-game so they can find it again easily: a strong positive signal, since it takes deliberate action rather than just showing up.

Recommend

A player explicitly suggesting an island to a friend in-game: the platform's built-in word-of-mouth signal, and a strong driver of new player discovery.

Favorite-to-play ratio

How often a play turns into a favorite: a conversion rate showing whether players who try an island like it enough to bookmark it.

See alsoFavorite

Recommend-to-play ratio

How often a play turns into a recommendation: a conversion rate showing whether players who try an island like it enough to actively tell a friend.

See alsoRecommend

Time-to-favorite

How quickly, on average, a player favorites an island after first playing it. Fast time-to-favorite means the appeal is immediate rather than something that takes repeat visits to appreciate.

See alsoFavorite

Replay rate

Plays divided by unique players: how many times, on average, each distinct player replayed the island. A replay rate well above 1 means people are coming back for more, not just visiting once.

Plays ÷ Unique players

Derived metrics

Retention-Adjusted Engagement(RAE)

Our own composite metric combining how long players stay per visit with how many come back the next day: designed to surface islands with a genuinely strong, repeatable loop rather than just raw traffic. Only computed for islands with enough volume (≥1,000 plays, ≥500 uniques) to be statistically meaningful.

Avg minutes per player × D1 retention

See alsoD1 retention

Health Score

A 0-100 score (Excellent ≥75, Good ≥55, Fair ≥35, else Needs Attention) summarizing an island's overall standing, built from four independently-shown, equally-weighted factors (no hidden weighting). Pro + Verified feature on Islands.

PSVS

Playtime Surrounding V-Bucks Spend (an Epic-defined figure from the Creator Portal export): the portion of an island's playtime that clusters around a player making a V-Bucks purchase. It's the component of Epic's engagement-payout formula that varies most between islands, so the same total playtime can pay out very differently depending on how much of it sits near a purchase.

Payout efficiency

PSVS divided by total active playtime for a Verified island: what share of an island's playtime is the kind Epic's payout formula rewards most, as opposed to playtime generally.

PSVS ÷ Total active playtime

Benchmark

How your island's own numbers compare to the rest of the platform (or its genre) at the same percentile bands: answers "is this good?" rather than just showing a raw number in isolation.

See alsoPercentile

Percentile(p50 / p90)

Where a value ranks against everything else. "p50" is the median: half of islands are above it, half below. "p90" means only 10% of islands score higher, so "your D1 vs. genre p50" tells you whether you're beating the typical island in your genre.

Week-over-week(WoW)

The percent change between this week's number and last week's: the standard way this app shows short-term momentum on every stat.

See alsoDelta

Delta(Δ / %Δ)

The change in a number versus a prior period: shown as "Δ" for a raw difference or "%Δ" for a percent change. Green usually means up, red means down (direction of "good" varies by metric).

Trend

A metric's direction over a longer stretch of time (a line chart over days or weeks), as opposed to Delta's single before/after comparison.

App features

Islands

Your personal hub for islands you own or watch: free public trend charts and a Health Score the moment you claim one, with deeper private analytics unlocked once you upload your Creator Portal export (Verified).

Watchlist

The competitor islands you've chosen to track inside Islands (labeled "Watching" in the app), separate from the islands you actually own.

See alsoIslands

Alerts

Your notification inbox for the islands you track: Discover row entries/exits, D1 retention swings crossing a band, and breakouts. Delivery (email/Discord) is configured from Islands.

Genres

Discover's genre-by-genre view: Genre Rank Visibility and Genre Rank Entry Bar (who's charting and what it takes to hold a spot), Genre Fingerprint (a shape comparison across plays, session length, retention, and Discover Exposure), Rank Milestones (percentile thresholds on Epic's own genre chart), and Discover Visibility (which Browse panels an island is currently showing on).

Genre Rank

An island's position in Epic's own genre chart (1 is best), a real, stable ranking, unlike Discover row position, which rotates day to day and was never a rank. Shown on the island detail page and in Genre Rankings on the Leaderboards tab.

Genre Power Ranking

Ranks all 13 genres against each other, one metric at a time (players, playtime, plays, saturation and more) - a different axis from Genre Rank, which ranks islands within one genre. Shown on the Leaderboards tab.

Daily Intelligence Brief

A free, AI-written daily narrative summarizing what moved on the platform: the fastest way to catch up without digging through every chart yourself.

Weekly Report

A published-weekly digest covering the platform's core activity, engagement, retention, and creator/genre movement for the past week, with admin-written commentary. Free to read.

Payout Pulse

A Pro + Verified tab on the island detail page showing PSVS trend, payout efficiency, and retained-player trend: the closest FN Analytica gets to showing real payout-adjacent numbers, since Epic doesn't expose those publicly.

Market Concentration

An Ecosystem-tab chart showing how much of the platform's traffic is concentrated in a small number of top islands vs. spread broadly: a health signal for how competitive the wider ecosystem is.

Risk & Timing

An Intelligence-page section covering when to publish and how island performance typically decays over time: helps time a launch and anticipate a natural traffic drop-off rather than reading it as a problem.

UI & filters

Time range picker

The global control (top right of every page) that sets the window every chart on the dashboard, Discover, Intelligence, and Islands responds to at once: 24H = 24 hours, 7D = 7 days, 4W = 4 weeks, 8W = 8 weeks, 12W = 12 weeks. 8W and 12W are Pro ranges.

Number suffixes (K/M/B)

Shorthand for large numbers used throughout the app: K = thousand, M = million, B = billion. For example, 4.68M means 4,680,000.
